California living and adventures in creativity

Jonsi concert at Oakland’s Fox Theater

It’s been a long time since I’ve witnessed true creative genius at a concert. My husband recently introduced me to the Icelandic artist Jonsi, and we had the privilege of seeing him perform live at Oakland’s Fox Theater. As a side note, the Fox Theater is stunningly beautiful and in my opinion has the best acoustics in the Bay Area.

Jonsi’s music is very hard to describe. He sings in English and in Icelandic, but for me, the lyrics seem insignificant compared to the grandeur and complexity of the music. His music is bold and mysterious and takes you on a journey, building to a point where you are left heartbroken.

I didn’t know what to expect seeing him live - I thought it would be impossible to pair visuals with his music genius - Turns out I was very wrong. As you can see in this video my husband took, his videos complement his music perfectly. I felt as though I was transported into a musical short story with illustrations.

The true test of a concert in my opinion is how long it stays with you. It will be a long time before my mind stops drifting back to Jonsi’s performance. What a rare treat!

Leonard Cohen

This weekend I was introduced to the legendary Leonard Cohen.  I am embarrassed to admit that I was completely unaware of this man and his extraordinary talents in songwriting.   Within a few minutes of the concert I was immediately absorbed into his art.  The concert lasted for over 3 hours, which in my opinion was an unbelievable feat given Mr. Cohen’s advanced age (he is 75).

This clip is from the performance we saw.  It’s impossible to capture the feeling in the auditorium but this gives you a little peak.  Enjoy!

Mad World

I absolutely love this video and feel a need to watch it ever so often.  It is equally haunting and beautiful.

We actually saw Gary Jules perform in a tiny venue in San Francisco and he was great; very laid back and authentic.  I really enjoy his music,  especially his CD Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets, which reminds me of my time living in San Diego.

Why does it seem like there aren’t as many amazing music videos out there? Or am I out of the loop?

Some audio to go with the beautiful concert scene.

Thanks to my husband’s iPhone, and given Wilco’s bootleg-friendly reputation, you will hear their performance of California Stars (appropriate for the evening).  Prior to the actual musical performance, you can hear Jeff Tweedy bantering with one of the audience members seated in the front row who had complained he couldn’t hear the performance?!  For the record, the sound was superb :)

A summer evening concert.
Nestled within the Santa Cruz mountains, among numerous rows of grape vines, the Mountain Winery has to be the most posh, beautiful, outdoor venue around.  The artists perform on stage with the old winery building as their backdrop, and as a spectator, you can also enjoy a view of Silicon Valley which is especially spectacular at night.  It’s hard to find a better situation in which to enjoy good music, especially since they also have many food options, and of course wine.  We had a wonderful time last night enjoying the music of Wilco in this breathtaking scenery.  We couldn’t help but wonder why all our concert experiences couldn’t be like this?

"There goes the fear"  We saw another amazing show at the Fillmore last night.  It definitely deserves all of the accolades for being a wonderful venue with spectacular acoustics.  Despite the crowds, we thoroughly enjoyed the show by the band Doves.  My husband reminded me that this was our fourth time in seeing this talented UK band.  They have just come out with a new album, Kingdom of Rust, however they ended their show with a inspiring performance of “There goes the fear” accompanied by one of their signature videos.  I never get sick of watching this mesmerizing video, and how the music progresses into something entirely unique at the end, is unexpected.  Good live music is one of life’s true pleasures.

We’re off to see Fleet Foxes in San Francisco at the Palace of Fine Arts.  We are so excited to see this band.  If you don’t know who they are, you must listen to them immediately!  This video of one of their recent songs, Mykonos, is mesmerizing.  Enjoy!
