California living and adventures in creativity

Brief break in the rain…..

We have had heavy rain storms all over California this week, and all this rain has made things incredibly green. This in itself is such a refreshing change since California has been in a drought for several years. As I mentioned in my previous post, I attribute my first daffodil bud to all of this lovely rain.

Just a short time ago, it stopped raining and blue sky is now peaking through the clouds. When I went to check on our bed of daffodils, I was met with this gorgeous blossom still heavy with drops of rain. What an amazing vibrant yellow! I say that they should name a crayon color “daffodil”.

If you didn’t check out my mini treasury with daffodils as the inspiration, take a look here.

Spring is around the corner for sure….. Have a great weekend!

Spring?

I noticed these buds on our daffodils the other day. Frankly I really think it’s a little early for them, but we’ve had some nice rain and some mild weather which has likely been the cause of their growth spurt . There’s something about spring flowers that is so cheerful and refreshing!

Photo inspired treasury

This is the first of hopefully many more treasuries inspired by a photograph.  This morning I noticed these little orange flowers on one of our bushes and was struck by how vibrant the colors were.  The flowers are very dainty and have a subtle almost citrus scent to them.  After I took the photo, I came up with the idea of making a treasury based on this photo.  I thought it would be fun to see what the talented Etsy artisans have in their shops that would work with this photo theme.    I was pleasantly surprised at the response to my challenge and many gifted Etsians rose to the occasion submitting their unique handcrafted items for consideration.  Below are my favorite 12, but I thank everyone who responded.  I think it is a lovely treasury, simply inspired by a photo of an orange flower found outside our front door.

Please take a look at these wonderful shops!

California poppy
The California poppy, our state flower, is free spirited.  We have a small bunch of poppies which just emerged this year in an unexpected spot.  Sandwiched between our fence and concrete, this pretty little grouping seems very healthy.  Their color is almost electric and their shape delicate and pretty.  What I think I like the most about poppies is how the flowers close at night, or even if it is cloudy.  It’s fitting that they are the state flower as they thrive in an area where most days they can be open and bask in the California sun.

Just pretty
I happened upon these beautiful roses at my neighborhood Trader Joe’s and really have enjoyed them for the past week.  I never use to be a rose fan, but I have completely changed my mind on this.  Maybe this has to do with living so close to a gorgeous public rose garden?  Or the fact that we have some lovely roses right out front, and I can’t seem to figure out what their name is?  Whatever it is, I am a huge fan.  They are the classic flower, but surprising in all the variations, colors, perfumes, etc.
There is something extra special about the color combination of these roses.  I absolutely love the pale pink centers surprisingly surrounded by a celery colored light green.  They epitomize freshness and pure natural beauty.  Just pretty.

California blue
This picture pretty much sums up why I am came up with the name “californiablue” for my Etsy shop.  The vibrance of colors, especially the shades of blue are so unbelievable here.  Also, there is a consistency of picture perfect days that seems fictional.  Growing up in upstate New York, we did not have these types of days.  Somehow the sky didn’t seem as big, or as confident in it’s blueness.  I admit that every place has it’s signature beauty, but ever since I moved to California, I have been in love with the color blue.
During my recent blog giveway, I received the suggestion that there should be a blue crayon called Morning Glory.  I’m thinking this picture should be submitted with this suggestion to crayola.

A special place.

Situated about 20 miles north of where I live, the Allied Arts Guild is a breathtaking  garden oasis which is home to open artists’ studios, a wide variety of unique shops and a lovely restaurant. The history of this place is fascinating, and since 1929 Allied Arts Guild has consistently supported a rare combination of priorities to include; providing an inspiring environment for working artists, maintaining beautiful gardens and historic buildings, offering unique shops showcasing handmade goods, and perhaps most significantly, supporting critically ill children via donations to the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital.

The grounds are simply spectacular, and the buildings are the old California Spanish style architecture which is my favorite.  I feel incredibly proud to have californiablue jewelry being sold through Allied Guild’s Artisan Shop and to support such a unique and admirable combination of priorities.
